We conducted a national survey of informal caregivers to determine how caregiving affected employment. The survey sample (n=1,181 as of 2/6/19) was obtained from multiple sources including employers, the National Alliance for Caregiving and Dear Abby. Caregivers reported on missed work time, difficulty functioning at work, productivity loss and out of pocket expenses. Additionally, the survey assessed caregiving demands and specific problems encountered balancing caregiving and work demands. This is the first survey to include detailed assessment of working caregivers providing assistance to family members and friends who require help due to an illness, disability or aging. After completing this session, participants will be able to: (1) Identify the economic and social impact of caregiving in the workplace; (2) Identify high quality measurement tools for ascertaining the economic and social impact of caregiving in the workplace; and (3) Identify policy and program interventions that may be effective in reducing the burden of caregiving on employed caregivers and their employers.
